WATCH: SEVENTEEN’s Performance Unit Hypnotizes In Sultry “Spell” MV

On May 17th at midnight KST, SEVENTEEN dropped yet another music video for the performance unit’s song from BEST ALBUM ’17 IS RIGHT HERE’ titled “Spell.”

The track is an amapiano genre song, which is a sub-genre of house music that is deeply tied to the cultural identity of South Africa where it originated. It has existed since the 2010s and is characterized by its heavy jazz influences and use of traditional African rhythms and melodies.

“Spell” emphasizes dreamy synth sounds and percussion instruments befitting the genre, and expressing a dazed and sensual mood that creates the feeling of knowing each other without words.

The performance unit’s youngest members The8 and Dino penned the lyrics with Woozi and Bumzu who also composed the track. The relaxing and delicate piece conveys a message of love through the team’s incantation “adila kia akia shurapoe” about the lyric “in a language only we know, I cast a spell.”

Like in all performance unit music videos, the emphasis is on choreography which “Spell” delivers in spades. The dreamy auras and undeniable charisma of Hoshi and Jun and The8 and Dino are captivating through elegant dance lines and powerful movements amid the many dancers joining them.

Visually, the magical imagery and vivid landscapes transport you to a different world, in addition to the glittery make-up and eccentric fashion sported by the quartet.
