SEVENTEEN‘s newest sub-unit, Jeonghan X Wonwoo (JxW), is here!
Consisting of the vocal team’s Jeonghan and hip-hop team’s Wonwoo, the pair released their first single album THIS MAN on June 17th at 6 p.m. KST.
The title track “Last Night” is a medium-tempo song with a Latin rhythm and acoustic guitar melody. The heavy beat and dramatic synth sound create a dark and sexy atmosphere while the combination of Jeonghan’s sweet, smooth voice with Wonwoo’s deep and raspy bass tone showcases the duo’s opposing charms.
“Last Night” was written and composed by Woozi and Bumzu and features guitar performed by famous Korean gypsy guitarist Park Juwon. The term ‘gypsy guitarist’ refers to the genre of Gypsy Jazz, which dates back to the 1930s. It can be defined as taking traditional Jazz music elements such as drums, piano, and brass and replacing them with acoustic guitars and other string instruments.
The music video is mysterious and otherworldly, depicting Jeonghan and Wonwoo as two men walking inside people’s dreams, and is inspired by an urban legend where people around the world witness a man in their dreams. Popular writer of thriller and horror novels Cho Ye Eun participated in crafting the intriguing story that runs throughout the entire single album.
Additionally, THIS MAN contains solo songs from both members. These include “Beautiful Monster” by Jeonghan which is a lovely and relaxed R&B tune you can hum along to, as well as the closing track “Leftover” which is an unexpected offering from Wonwoo in the form of a melancholy ballad with emotional vocals performed by the rapper.
