On August 9th at 6 p.m. KST, WM Entertainment boy group ONF returned with their newest summer album, POPPING, along with the title track of the same name.
“Popping” is a reinterpretation of the funky disco genre with K-pop and ONF’s solid musical identity. It expresses the feelings of summer love through cool voices and refreshing, soda-like energy.
ONF member Wyatt penned lyrics for the song which were also co-written by MonoTree’s Hwang Hyun. The song was also composed and arranged by Hwang Hyun as well, a songwriter who not only worked on every track on POPPING, but someone who has worked with ONF on a majority of their discography.
A total of five tracks— which showcase different shapes of summer— make up the special album. Member MK also participated in composing the songs “Summer Poem” and “Dry Ice,” while Wyatt wrote lyrics for four out of five tracks on the record.
In typical ONF style, the music video is grand in scale and spectacular in visuals as well as with special effects. Much like the group’s previous MVs, “Popping” unfolds like a big-budget science fiction movie with ONF in the lead roles.
The release of their first full-album ONF: My Name and its repackage City Of ONF topped charts in Korea and abroad, breaking their own initial sales records.
Additionally, they demonstrated their international popularity by being featured in U.S publications Forbes and TIME’s “The 10 Bestselling Songs In Korea Halfway Through 2021” and “The Best K-Pop Songs of 2021 So Far” lists for their hit song “Beautiful Beautiful.”
