WATCH: NewJeans Sings Of Grit And Glory In “GODS” Animated MV For The 2023 League of Legends World Championship

On October 4th at 2 p.m. KST, Riot Games revealed the 2023 League of Legends World Championship anthem sung by NewJeans!

“GODS” describes the constant struggle to survive in an environment filled with intense competition as well as the personal hardships one suffers in pursuit of being immortalized in greatness.

The song was written and produced by Sebastien Najand and Alex Seaver (Mako) who had both worked on an unforgettable collection of songs for League of Legends including “Legends Never Die (2017),” “RISE (2018),” and “Phoenix (2019).” They are also behind the creation of the tracks from the animated series “Arcane” and the songs from the virtual pop band K/DA which both feature stories and characters taken from the world of League of Legends.

This year’s animated music video tells the story of Deft (Kim Hyukkyu), the narratives that stem from his journey to win his long-coveted World Championship trophy, and DRX‘s triumphant Worlds run as underdogs in 2022. Many other players make their appearances in the video as their champions in unforgettable games and recreate iconic moments in the years leading up to now.

Among the many storylines, it highlights the significance of Esports superstar Faker (Lee Sanghyeok) as Deft’s former schoolmate and constant rival, someone he had faced in countless games throughout his career, and Keria (Ryu Minseok) as Deft’s best friend and former earnest Support, turned daunting opponent in the Summoner’s Rift. In his final push for the crown, Deft had to overcome both of them and T1 in a heart-stopping five-game series.

This year’s League of Legends World Championship is going to start on October 10th KST and will be held in South Korea for the first time since 2018. The event is considered to be one of the biggest in gaming and sports worldwide with several million fans tuning in annually to watch their favorite teams battle it out for the Summoner’s Cup.

Katherine grew up watching Korean dramas and other Asian shows. Although she first learned to appreciate Korean music through OSTs broadcasted locally, it wasn’t until 2011 that she properly paid attention to K-pop. She holds a fondness for SEVENTEEN and NCT and would recommend (G)I-DLE, Dreamcatcher, and XG to whoever cared to listen. She reads just about anything and is currently easing back into full novels.
