It was an epic Monday night at Atlanta’s Center Stage Theater as it housed one of South Korea’s greatest hip hop trios. The alternative hip-hop group Epik High, composed of rappers Tablo, Mithra Jin, and DJ Tukutz, took to the stage to deliver an unforgettable night of entertainment, laughs, and great music.
The tour kicked off in Minneapolis before moving on to cities like New York, Chicago, and more. In total, the amazing tour includes a total of 18 stops across North America and is still going on currently. The tour was the icing on the cake for fans, who are still on a high from the group’s recent comeback with sleepless in __________, the amazing album that has been a highlight of the group’s long career.
The group, previously represented by YG Entertainment and Woolim Entertainment, found its origin in the South Korean underground hip-hop scene during the early 2000s after rapper Tablo returned from his studies in the United States. Since their 2003 debut, Epik High has claimed countless major musical awards and achievements because of their versatility that is accompanied with diverse lyrics. They brought the grunge and grit of the underground hip-hop culture to the mainstream market and have since collaborated with an assortment of artists from both worlds.
New generations of fans might know rapper Tablo from his stint on the South Korean show “Return of Superman,” where viewers watched him and his daughter Haru go through the adventures of everyday life. In addition, mainstream K-pop fans will also know the trio by their collaborations with people like WINNER‘s Song Mino, IU, and more. However you found the group, there’s no denying their talent both in the studio and on the stage. The show in Atlanta can certainly attest to that!
The special night was pure entertainment from beginning to end. The night started off with a bang— and a splash! Armed with water bottles, the trio came out one at a time, and as their track “In Soul” engulfed the crowd, so did a light shower of water.
The audience welcomed the lyrics and light shower with cheers of excitement, and it only got better from there. Good music was a given, but as a first time Epik High concert goer, I was more surprised by how laid back and fun the show was. Jokes and laughs were exchanged all night during the fun breaks where they would talk. At one point, a fan even threw a pokeball to Tablo. They were probably trying to capture some of his comedy gold. He was very natural communicating with the crowd, due to him living in the USA for so long, and the night seemed to flow by way too quickly.
Not to be forgotten, their opening act, Yoshi Flower, was on a level of his own. The singer-songwriter was the perfect start to such a fun night. As someone that was new to his music, he worked the crowd into loud cheers and even had us harmonizing at one point. If you weren’t a fan before, you left the venue googling and searching for his name and music. His indie rock and hip-hop style songs got the audience moving and pumped for what was ahead. He’s definitely someone to keep an eye out for!
With all the talents unloaded on Monday night, the show was absolutely a must-see event! Whether you’re new to the group, a veteran fan, or looking for a night of great entertainment and music to match, seeing Epik High live should be on your list this year.
