On June 12th, South Korea’s award-winning director Bong Joon Ho screened his latest anticipated film, “Okja,” to the press in Seoul.
The film has garnered rave reviews from critics worldwide and was invited to the Cannes Film Festival where it was extremely well-received.
The film was backed by Netflix and will therefore be released online, as well as in theaters. This decision led to quite a bit of controversy from South Korean film critics and believe the film’s initial release belongs on the big screen only. As such, they held its first ever screening at a South Korean cinema.
CGV, Korea’s largest cinema chain, announced its boycott last week of the film. Lotte Cinema and Megabox have not yet decided whether to screen the film or not, but they still attended the screening.
After its premiere last month at the Cannes Film Festival, the film received both international and domestic acclaim for its unique screenplay and creativity, leading people to term it a “work of art.”
The Sci-Fi film is about friendship between a extraordinary super pig with diverse qualities and capabilities and Mija (Ahn Seo Hyun), a young girl who raised the pig in the mountains. The two get separated when Lucy Mirando (Tilda Swinton), owner of an international bio food corporation, takes Okja with the ulterior motive of revolutionizing the livestock industry. Following these events, Mija meets an activist group who attempts to help her rescue her best friend.
Netflix has scheduled the film’s release on June 29th!
