The Korean entertainment world once again shows worldwide popularity as the 52nd Baeksang Arts Awards trend globally on facebook.
The annual awards show was held on June 3rd at Kyung Hee University’s beautiful Grand Peace Hall in Seoul. The ceremony began in 1965 to honor outstanding achievements in the Korean entertainment industry, specifically films, television and theatre.
This year, the biggest stars in South Korea gathered to pay tribute to the best performances and work in the 2015-2016 season. Taking the spotlight on the red carpet was the “Song-Song Couple,” actress Song Hye Kyo and actor Song Joong Ki. The popular onscreen couple also took home awards for the Most Popular Actress (TV) and Most Popular Actor (TV).
Other notable wins of the night included Yoo Ah In for Best TV Actor (Six Flying Dragons), Kim Hye Soo for Best TV Actress (Signal), Do Kyung Soo for Most Popular Film Actor (Pure Love), Bae Suzy for Most Popular Film Actress (The Sound of a Flower) and Lee Byung Hun for Best Film Actor (Inside Men). The award for Best Drama went to Signal and the award for Best Movie went to Assassination.
In addition, the Grand Prize for Film was awarded to Dongju: The Portrait of a Poet, The Throne, while the Grand Prize for TV was awarded to the immensely popular Descendants of the Sun.
The fact that the Baeksang Awards are trending on a global level on facebook show that the Korean entertainment world is truly a worldwide phenomenon, with devoted fans from many different countries. Whereas K-pop and K-dramas were once bywords of a specific group of fans, the Hallyu Wave has taken down those barriers and brought Korean entertainment to the mainstream audience. Websites like Netflix, Dramafever, Viki and KissAsian provide subtitles so that fans can watch these popular films and television series in their own language.
