Jason Derulo, EXO‘s Lay, and NCT 127 will soon be collaborating for a special song and MV in honor of the late Michael Jackson.
The special single will be the first release in a four-part project to pay tribute to the legendary artist who passed away in 2009. This year, he would have celebrated his 60th birthday, so many of his fans and friends have been looking for unique ways to honor him and his legacy in music. With his birthday being today on August 29th, it was decided to reveal the news of the upcoming collaboration for the first release of the project.
The project is spearheaded by Jerry Greenberg of 769 Entertainment. Mr. Greenberg is the former director of MJJ Music, the label founded by Michael Jackson himself in 1993. In addition, Taryll Jackson, nephew of Michael Jackson and son of Tito Jackson, is also working on the project as a representative of the Jackson family.
The song from Jason Derulo, Lay, and NCT 127 is entitled “Let’s Shut Up and Dance.” It was written by Derulo, Bong Bytheway, and Ant Clemons.
Mr. Greenberg stated about the project, “[Michael Jackson] was all about diversity and inclusion [and] bringing us all together through his artistry. Our hope is that through this special project, we can all come together in these challenging times and celebrate him, and to continue to keep his legacy alive for generations to come.”
A teaser video was previously released for the project, where it came to the attention of Kpop fans when he mentioned he had invited BTS and former EXO member Luhan to participate. As such, fans are eagerly awaiting to see who else will participate in the remaining three songs of the project.
Rumors of an EXO tribute for Michael Jackson have been floating around the music community for many months now, but fans are now pleasantly surprised to find out the project includes NCT 127 as well. When you consider the various countries and languages represented among the NCT members, along with the fact that EXO’s Lay is Chinese, and Jason Derulo was born in American to Haitian parents, the combination seems to be the perfect, global mixture for a collaboration in honor of Michael Jackson, an advocate for diversity.
