K-pop artists continue to make their mark on the music world!
On July 23rd, the nominees for the upcoming 2019 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) were revealed! Several K-pop groups were nominated for different categories, making fans excited to tune in to the awards and see the final winners.
The VMAs added a new category, entitled “Best K-pop,” to their awards this year. The new category shows the organization’s acknowledgement of the growing impact of K-pop on listeners in the U.S. and beyond, bringing an awareness to the fact that K-pop is no longer just limited to Korea. For this category, EXO‘s “Tempo,” MONSTA X‘s “Who Do U Love” featuring French Montana, NCT 127‘s “Regular,” BLACKPINK‘s “Kill This Love,” TXT‘s “Cat & Dog,” and BTS‘s Boy With Luv” featuring Halsey were all nominated.
In the meantime, BTS showed their global popularity once more by receiving an additional three nominations for their video! The group’s video for “Boy With Luv” was also nominated for “Best Collaboration,” “Best Choreography” (by Rie Hata), and “Best Art Direction” (by BoNa Kim and JinSil Park). In these categories, the K-pop group is up against major Western celebrities like Taylor Swift, Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello, Ariana Grande, and more.
