Korean-American artist KATIE is back with the all-English single “Unbreak” on July 19th at 6 p.m. KST.
The song is a composition of rhythmic instruments including dreamy, flowing synths which accompany sincere and soulful vocals. KATIE’s unique sound and emotional voice creates an intimate performance and a luxurious soundscape in the future R&B genre.
“Unbreak” conveys the message of healing someone’s previous heartbreak with your love while the overall message of the song is strength. Meanwhile, the song itself showcases a fast tempo that expresses the lyrical concept through KATIE’s unique sense of rhythm and sophisticated musical delivery.
Fans of the Korean BL web series “Cityboy_log” will recognize “Unbreak” which features quite prominently throughout the third season. Producer of that series — SJ “SINXITY” Shin — is also the CEO of the label AXIS that KATIE is signed with.
Additionally, SINXITY — who is a former YG creative director — serves as the producer of the “Unbreak” official visualizer. Filmed in Tokyo, Japan, the visualizer stars KATIE herself, alongside KPLUS model and actor Yukito Hidaka, whose profile also appears on the single’s cover art.
KATIE first gained attention in 2015, winning the fourth season of “K-Pop Star” and signing with YG Entertainment until 2018. Her debut song “Remember” was so popular that KATIE re-released it featuring American hip-hop artist Ty Dolla $ign. What’s more, the follow-up single “Our Time” was one of Apple Music’s picks for the 100 Best Songs of 2020 playlist.
Growing up in New Jersey, where she attended Berklee College of Music, KATIE’s smoky vocal tones, delicate deliveries, and powerful bravado are evident in her jazz vocal training received at the prestigious institute.
In particular, the songstress admires and is influenced by R&B icons like India.Arie, Lalah Hathaway, and Anthony Hamilton, whose distinct sounds are reflected in her discography.
