Following the release of his successful sophomore EP, Castles, singer-songwriter James Lee has dropped the heart-wrenching and emotional music video for “Liar” on August 21st at 5p.m PDT.

A fusion of styles from James’ past as a bass guitarist to the music he now embodies as a producer, “Liar” is an acoustic guitar-enriched and melancholic track that builds to surprising 808’s and a hip-hop beat climax. The song also features the poignant performance of world renowned cellist and string arranger Yoed Nir.

Lyrically, the song expresses the disbelief and regret experienced after a breakup, while James’ signature raw and honest vocals convey the baring of his soul as he cries out for love that’s already left the relationship.

The accompanying music video was directed by Brad Wong— who also directed James’ previous MVs for “The Light” and “Perfect (featuring Amber Liu).” Playing out like a short, indie film, the dramatic, gloom that the song requires is accomplished through feats of cinematic shots and concept choices, in addition to a sincere and vulnerable performance from James.

The singer-songwriter has been candid throughout his journey by sharing his struggles and victories on Instagram, inspiring his fans who continue to show him their unwavering support. This is highlighted by the multitude of names listed in the credits at the end of the video — a benefit for his legion of Patreon members.

A new song from James is expected to be released on September 4th as part of his song per month campaign.
