BIGBANG‘s G-Dragon (real name Kwon Ji Yong) has official reported for duty!
Around 2 p.m. KST on February 27th, the world-famous singer-songwriter entered the 3rd Infantry Division recruit training center in Cheorwon, Gangwon Province. Although YG Entertainment had not confirmed that location of his enlistment, a report was previously published that leaked the information. Therefore, many fans turned out to show their support for the popular artist.
Before recruits ever started arriving to the training center, the center started playing music over the loudspeaker as fans gathered, including G-Dragon’s song “Untitled 2014.” Fans stood calmly and quietly with signs promising they would wait for their favorite idol and wishing him luck. Press also gathered at the event as well.
Before G-Dragon was spotted, fans noticed his family already in attendance. A little while later, G-Dragon showed up in an all-black outfit. Despite a hat and a mask covering some of his face, his eyes looked calm and steady as he reported in to begin his mandatory military service.
It’s a well-known fact that G-Dragon also has many male fans, unlike a lot of other male idol singers who have primarily female fans. Therefore, many people are wondering what serving in the military will be like for such a famous celebrity. His popularity was proven as even other soldiers began taking G-Dragon’s picture when he arrived.
The 3rd Infantry Division, also known as the White Skull Unit, is also the division for celebrities such as Joo Won and Ji Chang Wook.
After five weeks of basic training, G-Dragon will be transferred to one of the units under the 3rd Division. He will then serve as an active duty soldier before being discharged on November 26th, 2019.
