Long-Time Hosts Jung Hyungdon And Defconn To Leave “Weekly Idol”

The long time hosts of “Weekly Idol” will be leaving soon.

On February 22nd, following rumors and whispers of the popular MC’s leaving after seven years on the show, a post by the company’s official Twitter brought to light that it was true. Jung Hyungdon and Defconn have been the main hosts of “Weekly Idol” since its first episode aired back in July of 2011. The host duo, more recognized simply as “Doni” and “Coni,” are set to leave following the airing of their last episode on March 7th.

“Weekly Idol” (주간아이돌, previously known as 금주의 아이둘) was an afternoon program on MBCEvery1 that gave idol groups and artists the chance to introduce themselves to the public properly or otherwise show off their many talents. “Weekly Idol” became one of the longest “continuously” running variety programs on satellite television in Korea. However, like many programs, “Weekly Idol” seems to be following the seven year-curse before undergoing a huge change, or otherwise coming to an end. However, having had nearly every Kpop band and artist (new and old) on its set at one point in time, the show gathered a huge following from national and international fans alike as it became their place to go for new information or to see new moments from their favorite performers.

Back in late 2015, when Hyungdon took a break for health reasons, Super Junior‘s Heechul and EXID‘s Hani became temporary hosts. There were various other guest hosts over the course of seven years to include INFINITE‘s Sunggyu, GOT7‘s Jackson, MONSTA X‘s Jooheon, GFRIEND‘s SinB, TWICE‘s Dahyun, BTOB‘s Sungjae and Ilhoon, and more! There is currently no information on which people will become the new hosts, but it is reported that the program will undergo major changes and will technically start as a new season.

Defconn and Hyungdon each have other popular programs they are individually involved in, including “Infinite Challenge,” “Happy Sunday,” and “2 Days 1 Night.” They also were co-producers together who created the groups Big Byung (VIXX’s Hyuk and N, GOT7‘s Jackson, and BTOB’sSungjae) and Chamsonyeo (KARA’s Youngji, 4MINUTE’s Sohyun, After School’s Lizzy, and G.NA).

In any case, we wish good luck to Hyungdon and Defconn in their individual promotions and future projects!

CaptainMal has been into Korean Entertainment for seven years now, since 2010. She travels to conventions in her area, showcasing her “Kpop Game Show’” and occasional Kpop cosplay. Although her favorite bands are Infinite, Super Junior, and VIXX, she boasts a love for a huge variety of artists. Other than Kpop, CaptainMal loves Disney, 80’s rock, Daft Punk, Gaming, and Orange Juice.
