BLACKPINK Sets YouTube Record For Kpop On First Anniversary

Just in time for their first anniversary since their debut in 2016, BLACKPINK has set a new Kpop record!

On August 8th, the group’s newest MV, entitled “As If It’s Your Last,” became the fastest Kpop MV to break 100 million views!

The record was previously held by TWICE for their MV “TT” and took them 71 days to reach this amazing number. However, BLACKPINK’s new MV took first place by reaching 100 million views in only 48 days— an astonishing record.

Previously, the major Kpop records were almost always set by boy groups. However, girl groups these days are showing a lot of power and taking the top spot on charts, in number of views, trending worldwide on SNS, and more. Girl groups have always been popular in Korea, but in recent years, they have gained a tremendous amount of international fans as well.

Before, girl groups could really be put into two categories: sexy or cute. Recently though, many girl groups are breaking that mold and just becoming famous for their music. Groups like BLACKPINK have just as many female fans as male fans, and TWICE attracts both younger and older fans with their catchy music and fresh sound. In addition, BLACKPINK is attempting to fill the void left by 2NE1— one of the first girl groups to really break the mold and embrace their own style of music. All of this combined is part of what is making Kpop girl groups such heavy hitters these days. Talk about girl power!

Congratulations to BLACKPINK for this amazing record, as well as reaching their one year anniversary on August 8th! What a nice present for BLACKPINK and their fans.
