The Golden Eyes is an adventure-filled, supernatural drama that stars charismatic leads Lay (Zhang Yixing) of EXO and Wang Zi Xuan. Based on the popular book by the same title, the series follows the story of Zhang Rui (Lay) as he obtains the power to see through objects, people, and— most importantly— ancient artifacts. With his powers, Zhang Rui encounters human greed at its worst, learns important life lessons, and gains a new-found perspective.
The production team for the series is the same one behind the hit drama “The Mystic Nine.” It includes the same high quality production and impressive storytelling as seen in the other drama. However, “The Golden Eyes” excels at combining the strengths of Chinese culture with a fast-paced plot as seen mostly in Western productions.
If you haven’t watch the show yet, read on to learn the top four reasons why you should check this series out!
1) An Interesting Plot
The trailer alone lets you know just how suspenseful and action driven this drama is. Its intriguing plot begins with Zhang Rui acquiring his golden eyes, discovering the lengths of his new-found powers, and finally figuring out why fate has bestowed the golden eyes upon him. Throughout each action-packed episode, you’ll also find doses of comedy, love interests, and villains— the perfect combination for a riveting drama.
2) EXO’s Lay as Zhang Rui
The main role in this drama is played by multi-talented Lay of EXO. Perhaps because the two are very alike, Lay manages to execute Zhang Rui’s character incomparably. Moments such as the confusion and curiosity Zhang Rui has when he discovers his powers are clearly portrayed by Lay. He successfully transforms himself into a strong, humble character who leaves viewers wanting to see more.
3) Historical Insight
The plot has a strong focus on Zhang Rui’s ability to see if antiques— such as jade, ceramic ware, silk paintings or other artifacts— are real. His new-found power gives him the ability to gain insight into the items’ history. Because of this, the items’ histories are described in detail in order to find out the items’ worth. References to locations, time periods, and historical terms allow the viewer to gain insight into China’s historical artifacts.
4) The Magic of The Golden Eyes
The most absorbing parts of the series so far are the scenes where Zhang Rui uses his golden eyes. The screen turns dark, the object comes into focus, and suddenly the golden eyes appear. The screen smoothly zooms into the objects and we’re able to see every layer on the object, until we see either the object’s history or its contents. The use of effects and visuals in order to demonstrate the power of the golden eyes makes for spectacular scenes.
